Food Photography

Stir fry
In this image I had my step mum assist me by making the food, she left me some food to style myself. I picked out the best pieces to include in the bowl and took a series of images, making sure to include different compositions like this close-up shot.

cake close up
For this image I planned what food I was wanting to take pictures of, and I thought it would be fun to include sweet food in the project. I bought a cake and used a range of props to fill the scene. I used fairy lights, lemons and a wooden serving board that I purchased specifically for my photoshoots.

stir fry version 2
This image helped me discover new compositions in my project. I tried out a birds-eye view since I wasn't too familiar with this kind of composition. One thing I would like to improve in the future is the lighting as I am not happy with the shadows.

pie
Here I used some food styling techniques by getting two pies, and scooping the filling from one of them into the pie shown in the image. I did this so I could make it look more appealing and more like what you would see in a general food advertisement. I handmade the wedges and placed them carefully on a slate board which was bought specifically for my photography projects.

flapjack
In this image I used a birds-eye view composition again so I could try filling out the area with raw ingredients like oats as well as sugar granules. I wanted to keep the same warm tones so I stuck with the wooden table and board.

muffin
In this image I wanted to achieve a low angle shot, to present the details of the cupcakes. I felt the cupcakes looked too plain so I decided to sprinkle on some icing sugar. During the editing process I added a cool tone filter as I felt it complimented the warm colours of the cupcakes.

cake
For this image I worked with another birds-eye composition as I attempted to pull off a frame full with the lemons and wooden board. I experimented with the limited lighting resources that I had by having the light at the side to bring out the depth of the cake along with any details we wouldn't usually see in normal lighting.

pastry dessert
In this image I experimented with leading lines, placing the cakes strategically to help guide the viewers eyes to each item in the shot. During the editing I did not have good backdrops so I was able to edit in a complimentary kitchen wall using Photoshop.

spagetti
For this image I wanted to work with dramatic lighting. I achieved this by shooting with a low exposure and strategically angled lighting to help give the food harsher shadows.

noodles
Here I thought it would be fun to try and make cheap food look expensive. It was more of an experimental task than a photography project, and I used 35p noodles to create this picture. The cloth used in the image had polka dots on them but I edited them out in Photoshop as I felt it would distract from the main object.

garlic
Here I found inspiration from a Photographer called Harold Ross, I enjoyed the way he altered the lighting in his work, and how moody the images felt. I wanted to create my own version using a small jar of garlic granules, a garlic clove and garlic press.

Coffee
This image was the first "foof photography" image i took. Though I was able to challenge myself with different materials, props and lighting I feel there is much to improve on. I feel the shadow is too dark and the froth I added in using dish soap, felt out of place. To improve on this I will work on the lighting by using a reflector, to help bounce the natural light I used.
